Educated- Nonfiction Mini-Review

Educated by Tara Westover

5 Full Stars!  I loved this book.  There are so many layers to what this book is about.  For me it had an interesting story of the authors insane childhood in Idaho. I know they are true stories, but it seems unbelievable with the families views on "homeschooling" and doctors.  Then I reflected on the importance of education, she was successful without having any college readiness but still was very naive when she first left home. Her success is not typical and I appreciated her honesty with some of the things she didn't know anything about.  She was lucky to  have roommates that helped her grow, develop and acclimate to a "typical" college experience as she realized things her father had told her weren't true or common. The final thread throughout the book is her family's dynamics.  I think this circled me back to the education, was her family not able to see her struggles to fit in with an abusive sibling due to the lack of experiences and education or was it mental illness?  With her studies it had me feeling like a philosopher thinking and reflecting with her and her struggles. I stayed up way too late reading it, but I couldn't put it down.  I highly recommend this book to non fiction lovers.  It is one of the top memoirs I have read.   Thanks to NetGalley and Random House publishing group for the opportunity to read this book.

This is my 3rd Nonfiction book read this year and my favorite, it will be hard to top!  (My goal is 9)

  3. For some reason, the topic of this book hasn't really appealed to me. Perhaps simply because I read a memoir of a woman raised in a cult recently that was a let down and this seems similar. It's been getting such great reviews though, I'm starting to consider giving it a try. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it so much :)
